FERGUS – It’s a milestone year for the Grand Celtic Pipe Band as they enter their 25th anniversary this year.

Former member of the Guelph Pipe Band Peter Hummel is now Pipe Major for the Grand Celtic Pipe Band.

He acknowledged it is “huge” to lead the group into year 25.

The band will also be entering competition for the first time in what Hummel estimates has been quite some time. He says this is something pushing the band to improve.

It’s been busy for Hummel since taking over as pipe major in March of last year. The band has played Culture Days, several Christmas parades, and even busked enough to raise money for a new tuner.

Hummel, who came from the Guelph Pipe Band last March, says the transition has been one that has him feeling positive about his new group.

Reminding residents about the upcoming Robbie Burns Night in partnership with the Highland Rugby Club, Hummel says he looks forward to the year to come, including a focus on working tirelessly with youth in the community.

As for the band, they set their sights on year 25, and competitions in both Embro and home town of Fergus at the Highland Games.

The Grand Celtic Pipe Band practices Monday nights upstairs at the Elora Legion.
