A Year in Music – 2024 – John Lambert (Chequerboard)
How are you, what sort of year have you had?
Good thanks, the first half was busy with music and the second half has been busy with parenting so it’s been a year full of rehearsals, playing guitar, broken sleep and a lot of early morning starts.
What are the albums you enjoyed most this year?
Bogdan Raczynski : You’re Only Young Once but you can be stupid forever
Michiru Aoyama – Usirokara
Sonny Chillingworth – Sonny Solo
David Murphy – Cuimhe Ghlinn: Explorations in Irish music for Pedal Steel Guitar
Jonny Dillon – A New Directive from the Bureau of Compulsory Entertainment
Is there any artist or album that defined the year for you?
For me personally, it would have to be Bogdan Raczynski for his output on all levels, interviews, posts, videos, workshops and new music. Always inspiring. For example :
Did you get to many gigs this year?
I saw DUG in Whelans, Adam Buxton in Vicar Street, Christopher Chaplin & Katie Kim in the NCH and went to Stephen Shannon’s album launch as part of Metronome. All great gigs. They’re the ones I remember offhand anyway.
Do you think it will get to the stage where the ‘big concert’ is unaffordable for most of us?
You would assume so, but they still keep selling out, so god knows what kind of seismic shift has to happen to change that course. Despite the price-gouging, the Oasis gig still sold out, so what does that tell you? Unfortunately, the answer is probably no.
What’s your reaction if Stairway To Heaven comes on the radio
I probably wouldn’t notice to be honest. Sadly, some songs, no matter how good they are, turn into wallpaper over time and overexposure. I’d truly love to listen to it for the first time again though.
Anything interesting in the works yourself for 2025?
Nothing planned really although I’ll probably at some point start carving out a bit of time to start stoking the fires of creativity again. Nice to have a blank page in front of me after putting out Souvenir earlier this year.
